It’s the year 2008. You’re attending Coachella, California’s most famous — nay, one of the world’s most famous — music festivals, for the first time. Jack Johnson is headlining. As for the outfits, they’ve officially reached peak boho. There are peasant blouses worn with cut-off shorts and secured with chunky studded leather belts, daisy headbands worn across the forehead, knee-high gladiator sandals finish, long and wavy hair (perhaps complete with a feather extension) and if you weren’t carrying your life around in an oversized suede hobo bag, what were you doing? Love it or hate it, you can’t deny boho was one of the defining sartorial trends of the 2000s.
Well, as all trends tend to do… boho is back. Aligning with the return of boho icon Sienna Miller to the red carpet rotation, and the appointment of Chemena Kamali as creative director of Chloé, that laid-back, feminine brand of bohemian whimsy is trickling back onto runways and street style everywhere. But this time around, it’s a little different. The typical boho aesthetic is now evident in voluminous silhouettes, the contrast of richly embellished worn with more relaxed ones and, of course, a free-spirited attitude.
Here’s how to shop the new boho trend at Emporium Melbourne.
Channelling the elegant flounciness of new-era Chloé, Aje’s Tabitha blouse is made from a semi-sheer fabric with billowing sleeves, a ruffled V-neckline and sweet tie at the back. We’d dress it down with faded straight-leg jeans.

Zimmermann created the blueprint for the boho look in Australia and case in point is their Eden maxi. Crafted from silk in a sunny apricot print, the dress features cuffed blouson sleeves that billow in the wind and a hem that seems to float as you walk.

Cut-offs just grew up and the boho take sees micro-shorts fashioned from buttery soft leather. French brand Zadig and Voltaire’s take isn’t for the faint-hearted, but they’d look elevated with an oversized peasant blouse, barely-there sandals and a crossbody bag.

This time, the hobo bag is taking a backseat in favour of more sleek ways to carry your goods. Maje’s crackled leather, boxy top handle is made in a versatile burgundy hue (it’s basically a neutral) while the fringe is an elegant wink to the boho of yesteryear.
Crackled Leather M Bag, $565 from Maje, Level 1
Denim is a staple of a boho wardrobe, but forget fitted or straight leg styles. Wide leg jeans with some structure make the perfect backdrop for statement blouses and accessories — this Sandro pair ticks all the boxes.
Oslo Jeans, $410 from Sandro, Level 1
