Ten years ago, mini skirts were major on the runways before the rise of normcore and relaxed denim took hold of our hearts. And then… It all kicked off with Miu Miu’s Spring 22 micro mini — a style that spawned countless imitations and had us contemplating taking a pair of scissors to our favourite pleated skirt. Next came the low-slung, knee-grazing editions, and then sheer takes (often embellished with everything from swinging paillettes to delicate beading). Yes, skirts are in their hot girl era, and the latest iteration? Voluminous, puffed and swishing styles, reminiscent of the misunderstood bubble skirt, that are made for twirling around town.

Emerging from the depths of ’80s wardrobes, voluminous skirts are finding their way onto the coolest fashion girlies, street style stars and global runways. Why? Because they’re fun! Plus, they’re made for moving and offer endless styling possibilities.

“High volume skirts, whether it’s longer, maxi lengths or thigh-skimming minis, are surprisingly versatile,” says InStyle Australia market editor Annie Doig. “They were all over the spring/summer runways, and I think we’ll see more of them in the coming months post-Euro summer.” As for how to style them, Doig has a few tips to bear in mind. “Keep the top half more fitted — think a form-fitting sweater or tank to keep the focus on the skirt, and opt for a solid colour. Patterns can make an already dramatic silhouette difficult to wear regularly.” Here, we pick five voluminous skirts to consider adding to your rotation.

Forget everything you remember about the bubble skirt. The ’80s staple has had a 2024 cool girl rebrand, and it’s proving to be one of the most versatile mini silhouettes. This black version from Witchery would be right at home with a tank, slouchy socks and a pair of Onitsuka Tigers in summer, or tights, boots and a turtleneck in winter.

Reminiscent of a very chic tutu, Scanlan Theodore’s midi length tulle skirt brings the drama while still managing to stay wearable. We’d wear this skirt with a pair of sky-high pumps and a boxy cropped jacket to give it some edge.

An asymmetric slit on the leg gives this knee-length skirt an angular silhouette that promises to level up any office ensemble. The fringe bead embroidery means it’s fun on a dance floor too.

We’re calling it: this is the ultimate summer skirt. Made from taffeta, this smocked and ruched mini in Sicilian olive green will be right at home with a black bikini top and Birkenstock Big Buckle sandals.

An angelic take on a grungy style, JNBY’s creamy pleated asymmetric midi skirt is a contemporary twist on winter white. We’d keep it monochromatic and pair it with an off-white sweater and chunky boots.
