If there’s one thing Melbournians know, it’s to never trust the weather forecast. A sunny day can just as quickly become a rainy one, much like a southerly wind can turn a summer scorcher into sweater weather. It’s why anyone who lives in the city knows preparation is paramount, and never is preparation more essential than during the in-between seasons.

As we inch toward autumn — the season of amber-hued leaves and crisp mornings that become warm days — it’s time to start thinking about our trans-seasonal wardrobe. Namely, investing in great quality layers that can be added or subtracted from an outfit when the weather pulls an Uno Reverse. Think delicious wool knit cardigans, utilitarian-style chore jackets and lightweight long sleeves for wearing underneath. It’s not rocket science, it’s just a bit of forward planning. Here, our trans-seasonal outfit edit.

The wear-with-everything cardigan

One should never underestimate the utility of a cardigan, especially a classically cut, lightweight one in a versatile hue that’s perfect for layering. Viktoria and Woods’ version comes in three wearable shades (though we’re loving the practicality of the Oatmeal hue), has a slightly cropped, relaxed fit and looks chic tied over the shoulders when it’s a little too warm to wear.

The lightweight layer

A lightweight long sleeve might just be the in-between season MVP. It offers an extra layer of warm on crisp mornings, but not so much that you’re sweltering by midday. If you’re peeling off the layers, you’ll want the piece you’re wearing beneath to be just a little interesting, which is why we love Scanlan Theodore’s V-neck bodysuit.

The bring-with-you jacket

Though you might’ve baulked at your mother insisting you “bring a jacket!” as a kid, there’s no denying she was probably always right, and you were probably always cold. Though, we’re sure you’ve learned your lesson these days and will never leave the house without a light-to-carry, warm-to-wear jacket you can throw over anything. If you’re still yet to find “the one,” consider Ganni’s chic camel style complete with silver eyelets.

The multi-purpose skirt

In our opinion, the knee-length skirt is the new mini. Wear it with strappy kitten heels for an office siren-inspired ensemble on the last of summer’s hot days then sub in slouchy knee-high boots and a thin turtleneck come the autumn chill. Bec + Bridge’s taupe version is as versatile as it is sophisticated.

The bag to fit your life in

Being prepared often means carrying a few extra pieces with you, which calls for a sturdy but sleek bag that you can pack with the odd layer or two. Mulberry’s small version of its iconic Bayswater Tote is deceptively roomy. We especially love it in this delicious forest green hue.
