If the brief for this year’s Now or Never festival was to bring together curious creatives, adventurous individuals and everyone in between from across Victoria, it’s safe to say the team has hit the nail on the head. Returning to Melbourne/Naarm from August 22 to 31, Now or Never festival unites Australian and international talent spanning music, art and technology through a packed program of performances, talks and immersive installations. One such performer you’d be wise to mark your calendar for is Estella Boersma, a Dutch DJ and producer who joins forces with four other seriously exciting DJs for a night of nothing but techno.

Boersma began her career modelling for the likes of Nina Ricci, Elle US, Allure and Wonderland magazines before pivoting to music. As a producer and DJ, Boersma is renowned for deep house, trance mixes that belong in an underground techno club (or your headphones, if you’re in the mood). Her style, once feminine and preppy as a model, is now the epitome of cool girl grunge — akin to the gothic-chic ensembles you’d spy in line at Berghain. Her signature razor-sharp, blonde bob is stark against leather-laden outfits: think moto jackets, fishnet tanks and work pants. Naturally, black is her colour of choice, making Boersma the perfect style muse for Melbourne. Ahead of her set at Now or Never, we’ve curated an edit of the pieces we think she’d pick up at Emporium.

With its high neck and open back, Ksubi’s Slim Open Mock Neck Tee is equal parts grungy and futuristic. Pair it with a pair of baggy contrast stitch work pants, both in black, of course.

Workwear-style pants — that is, wide-leg, relaxed pants with plenty of pockets — are practically uniform for grunge girls. These ones from JNBY have an oversized silhouette and come in a faded dark wash, so it’ll look like you’ve had them for years.

If you’re going to be on your feet dancing to techno all night long, you’re going to need a comfortable pair of shoes. Favourite brand of gorp core enthusiasts, Salomon’s XT-6 Gorp Tex sneakers are made for hiking, so will keep your feet comfortable until the wee hours.

An all-black ensemble is always interesting, especially when you add in some sculptural and textural elements. Case in point: Sass & Bide’s Calypso Faux Fur bag. A crescent shape with chunky silver detailing, it’s the perfect weird-but-cool accessory.

What’s an outfit without a pair of sunglasses? These little Miu Miu ones with lime lenses are perfect for wearing all day and all night, whether you’re behind the decks á la Estella Boersma or out for a night on the town.
